In order to get higher yields, maize crop should be kept weed free for 30 to 40 days after sowing. For this purpose, two to three manual hand weeding and two to three interculturing operations should be carried out.
Sometimes due to continuous rains during the early period of maize growth, it is not possible to enter in the field. In such situations, the only effective way to control weeds is the use of herbicides. Atrazine @ 1.5 kg /ha should be mixed in 500-600 litres of water and evenly spray on the soil surface just after sowing but before emergence of seeds. There should be enough moisture in the soil at the time of spraying. Field should not be disturbed for initial three weeks after spraying.
