Principles of successful intercropping
-------------------------------------------
• Objective is higher productivity in unit area in unit time with yield stability.
• The time of peak nutrient demand of component crops should not overlap Ex: Maize + Blackgram Here peak nutrient demand for black gram is 30 to 35 DAS and for Maize 50 to 55 DAS.
• The selected component crops should be complementary to each other.
• The intercrop fitted should be of shorter duration than main crop at least 30 days.
• Competition for CO2, water, light and space should be minimum.
• The component crops should have different rooting depth so as to have nutrient extraction zones Ex: Main crop – deep rooted and intercrop- shallow rooted.
