DISEASE MANAGEMENT:
-----------------------

Yellow vein mosaic disease (Yellow vein mosaic virus)
• This severe virus is transmitted by the insect vector white fly (Bemicia tabaci). This destructive disease infects at all stages of the crop.

• Symptoms:
--------------------
o Yellowing of the entire network of veins in the leaf blade is the characteristic symptoms.
o In severe infections the younger leaves turn yellow, become reduced in size and the plant is highly stunted.
o In a field, most of the plants may be diseased and the infection may start at any stage of plant growth
o Yield of Fruits are very much reduced
o Infection restricts flowering and fruits, if formed, may be smaller and harder

• Control measure:
---------------------------
o Grow resistant or tolerant varieties like, Arka Abhay, Arka Anamika, VRO-6, NOH-303and some resistant hybrids.
o Adjust the sowing time according to white fly population. Early sowing of crop during January-February to some extent reduces the intensity of disease and also autumn sowing (October-November) reduces the intensity of disease.
o Remove diseased plants as soon as they are noticed in field.
o Control white fly by 3?4 foliar sprays of dimethoate (Rogor
2ml/l) or imidachlorpid (3.5 ml/10 l or thiomethoxam (3.5
ml/10 l.

Powdery mildew(Erysiphe cichoracearum:)
• This fungal disease appears under prolonged dry conditions. White floury or powdery pustules appear on the lower surface of leaf extending to upper surface causing yellowing and death of the leaves.
• Control Measures

o Spray the crop with Bavistin or Benlate @ 1 g/1 of water 3 to 4 times at 15 days interval,
o Two sprays of 0.1% Bavistin followed by two sprays of 0.1% Karathane or Tridemorph effectively control the disease.
