DOWNY MILDEW
DOWNY MILDEWDOWNY MILDEW
-------------
Symptoms
• The disease is appear on young pea plants as downy growth on the under surface of leaves.
• The diseased tissues are appearing as gray coloured patches and cover most of the leaf surface.
• The pathogen produced conidiophores in the infected tissues.
• The disease affected plants stunted very much.
• The symptoms of the disease on pods are seen at flat pod stage.
• The pods infected by the pathogen do not produce normal sized seeds.
Control
• Plant resistant or tolerant cultivars. A number of European-bred garden pea cultivars are resistant or tolerant. Semi-leafless or reduced-stipule cultivars appear extremely susceptible.
• Rotate out of legumes for 2 or 3 years.
• Burn or bale infested pea straw after harvest.
• The best fungicide for early control is metalxyl at 0.05% at 10-15 days interval.
Pea rust
Pea rust Pea rust
----------
Uromyces fabae (Persoon) de Barry.
Symptoms
• The rust of pea occurs in severe form in cooler regions of India.
• The uredosori are small, oval or round and brown in colour are present on the surfaces of leaves.
• At the severe infection, the complete leaf withers and dies prematurely.
• As the disease progresses, the dark brown coloured telia are formed on stem and leaves. The aecial and pycnial cups are produced on the same host plant.
• In cool and wet climate of northern India, the entire plant may be killed.
Control
• Burning of infected crop debris will reduce the inoculum.
• Early bloom stage of crop 4 weeks before harvest is most critical period for rust and must be protected from the infection.
• Fungicide spray should be immediately started when average of 2 spots per leaf are observed in the field.
• The best fungicide is 0.025% flusilazole sprayed at weekly intervals. Spraying of hexaconazole or bitertanol or tridimefon or tebuconazole or karathane or carbendazim or baycor all at 0.05% at 10-15 days interval is also effective.
• Pea cultivars NDVP-3 (vegetable type), Batri brown, and Pea 9 are reported to be resistant to rust disease.
