Watermelon is indigenous to tropical Africa. It has been grown widely on both side of equator. Morphologically the colocynth, which is found in India also used in Ayurvedic medicine, has similar characters with vulgaris but fruits are bitter and with small seeds. he fruit contain 95 per cent, water, 0.2 per cent protein, 0.3 per cent minerals and 3.3 per cent carbohydrates per 100 g fresh weight. Among all members of cucurbitaceous crops, Watermelon is the rich in iron content. Most of the cultivars have deep pink or pale pink flesh colour with a slightly reddish tinge, containing largely lycopene and anthocy anin pigments. It is a common man`s fruit reí i shed by millions rich and poor, young and old. The juice is an alternative to drinking water in desert areas. It has cooling effect It is not usually advised to take watermelon immediately before or after meal.
