Watermelon planted on riverbeds does not need any irrigation as it obtains sufficient moisture through capillary action from die sub soil of the water. Irrigation once in 7 to 10 days may be required depending on the soil type and weather conditions. Watermelon is generally raised with furrow or basin irrigation in India. Pitcher irrigation can also be used in watermelon. It has been observed that drip irrigation and plastic mulch resulted in 32 to 36 per cent higher yield and 46 to 52 per cent higher water use efficiency as compared to furrow irrigation.
