IMPORTANCE OF CROP:

1. Also known as aubergine or eggplant.
2. Growing belts : India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines,France, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, U.S.A. and several countries of Africa.
3. Brinjal is the most common, popular and principal vegetable crop grown widely in India for its various shape, size and colour of fruits.
4. High productivity, wide adaptation and ease in availability make the crop to find its place as the poor man`s crop.
5. In India, it is cooked in vegetable and fish curry, sambar, mashed, fired its grilled and stuffed with spices and then fried.
6. Pigmented, dark purple brinjal has more vitamin C than those with white skin.
7. Bitterness of Fruits is due to presence of glycoalkaloids `solasodine` and purple skin colour of fruits is due to `anthocyanin` pigment.
8. Discoloration in fruit : high polyphenol oxidase activity ( highest in purple fruit and lowest in white )
9. Calyx persistent: Accrescent
