1. Practice shallow inter-cultivation particularly a few days after every irrigation to remove the weeds and conserve soil moisture.
2. 3-4 hoeings are normally needed to check the weeds.
3. Earthing up after second top dressing of nitrogen fertilizer is helpful.
4. Regarding chemical weed control, a pre-planting treatment of Pendimethalin 1.0 kg a.i./ha is effective.
5. Use of 2-5ppm 2,4-D or 20 ppm PCPA or 60 ppm NAA as whole plant spray at flowering promote fruit set and increase yield.
6. Spraying of the plant protection chemicals should be avoided in the morning hours to facilitate free movement of the pollinating insects like, bees.
