Mango can be grown in all types of soils, except black cotton soil which is considered to be poor. The only pre-requisite is a deep (2 to 2.5 m) and well drained soil. However it grows successfully in soft rocky areas of the west coast. The most suitable pH ranges between 5.5 to 7, but can be grown commercially up to 8.5 pH with proper nutritional management.
Mango can be grown at sea level to an altitude of about 1400 meter height provided there is no high humidity, rain or frost during flowering period. It does well with a temperature from 24 to 270 C although it can be tolerate even temperature as high as up to 410 C during fruit growing and ripening stage. Higher temperature at fruit growth hastens maturity, improve fruit size and quality.
It does well with rainfall ranging from 25 to 75 cms. Mango cannot do well in water logging conditions and frequent rains and high humidity during flowering which invites pest and diseases.
Bright sunny days and low humidity, during flowering are ideal for mango cultivation. Mango is highly cross pollinated crop. These conditions also promote the insect activity (pollination).
